You can change an empty ink cartridge by pressing the appropriate button; depending on your printer you will have one of the following buttons which will perform this function when pressed. Do not remove the cartridge from the printer until you are ready to replace it with another. The illustrations show replacement of the Cyan ink cartridge on the Stylus S21 single function inkjet printer, but the instructions are the same for all the cartridges and similar for all products listed in the “RELATES TO” section of this article.

Do not move the print head by hand, as this may damage the printer. Please ensure you follow the instructions in this article or your product’s User’s Guide. Be careful not to touch the white flat cable inside the printer. Press the button again.

If more than one ink cartridge is expended, the print head moves to the mark. This occurs each time you press the button until all expended ink cartridges have msnual indicated. Once all of the expended ink cartridges have manusl indicated, the print head moves to the ink cartridge replacement position when you press the button again. Note for SX users: The print head moves to the ink cartridge replacement position and the power light begins to flash.

The expended ink cartridge appears in the replacement position. If two or more ink cartridges are expended, the cartridge at the far left moves to the mankal position. You can replace the cartridge indicated first at this stage but you may prefer to wait and check if more ink cartridges are expended before replacing the first indicated one.

If two or more ink cartridges are expended, the next expended ink cartridge moves to the replacement position. Repeat to check other ink cartridges as needed. Use the replacement advice below as a guide.

Be careful when you handle used ink cartridges, as there may be some ink around the ink supply port. If ink gets on your skin, wash the area thoroughly with soap and water. If ink gets into your eyes, flush them immediately with water. If discomfort or vision problems continue after a thorough flushing, see a manjal immediately.


Be careful not to break the hooks on the side of the ink cartridge when you remove it from the package. Do not touch the green IC chip on the side of the cartridge. This can damage the ink cartridge. Always install an ink cartridge immediately after removing the old cartridge.

If the cartridge is not installed promptly, the print head may dry out and be unable to print. You must remove the yellow tape from the cartridge before installing it; otherwise, print quality may decline mxnual you may not be able to print.

If you have installed an ink cartridge without removing the dx4400 tape, take the cartridge out of the printer, remove the yellow tape, and then reinstall it. Do not remove the transparent seal from the bottom of the cartridge; otherwise, the cartridge may become unusable. Do not remove or tear the label on the cartridge; otherwise, ink will leak.

The Power light continues to flash while the printer is charging ink. Never power off mmanual printer while this light is flashing. Doing so can result in incomplete charging of ink. If the error light is flashing or is on after the print head moves to its home position, the ink cartridge may not be installed properly. Press the button again, press the ink cartridge down until it clicks into place, and then close the cartridge cover firmly. On some models, you can also change a ‘low’ ink cartridge not expended by pressing this button.

This will be indicated by an ‘ink out’ pointer on the printer’s casing. It is not possible to change a cartridge that is not expended with the following models:.

In this instance, you will need to obtain a replacement cartridge. Flashing The original amount of ink remaining in the indicated cartridge is low. This is a good time to get a replacement cartridge ready for when the cartridge is expended. Make sure the power light is on, but not flashing.


Open the printer cover. Press the button on your printer which matches one of the descriptions in Table 2 above. The print head moves to the ink cartridge check position and the power light begins to flash. The ink cartridge indicated under the mark is expended. If you have new cartridges to hand, you can now replace the indicated ink cartridge s.

Shake the new ink cartridge s several times before opening the package. Remove the new ink cartridge from the package.

If a yellow label is on the bottom of the ink cartridge, remove it. Squeeze the tab at the back of the ink cartridge that you want to replace. Lift the cartridge straight up and out of the printer. Dispose of it properly. If it is difficult to remove the cartridge, lift the cartridge with more force until it comes out. Place the ink cartridge into the cartridge holder with the bottom down. Then push down the ink cartridge until it clicks into place.

When you are finished replacing cartridges, close the printer’s lid or scanner unit. The printer moves the print head and begins charging the ink delivery system. This process takes about one-and-a-half minutes to complete. When ink charging is finished, the print head returns to its home position. If you previously sent an print job to the printer which is yet to print, the Epson software may have an on-screen alert which you can acknowledge to resume printing.

If not, but you previously sent a document to print that hasn’t printed, check if there are any documents waiting to print and cancel them in order to resume printing.

Print jobs can be held in the print queue if the dx4400 was previously not ready to print, for example if any of the ink cartridges are empty or there is no paper loaded in the printer. Any documents in the queue will need to be cleared before you can send a print job again.
